Afia Barrie

Aspiring student multimedia journalist at Howard University.

Journalism has unknowingly been a passion of mine since I was a child. As a child of a West African family, I was raised on a steady diet of NPR, PBS, and ABC 7 Eyewitness News. This resulted in me chatting about the Afghanistan War on the playground and reporting my school day like the evening news to my parents, earning me my mother's nickname: her "little journalist." This passion has guided my endeavors.Currently, I serve as the Variety Editor of The Hilltop, the nation's oldest Black collegiate newspaper. My journalistic experience includes interning at The Washington Post, CNN, and PBS Newshour. I was also a staff writer for 101 Magazine, a student-run magazine in the School of Communications. At each place I’ve been able to focus on topics I love, learn about new things, and meet people from all walks of life. I’ve been able to shine light on previously untold stories and see the impact that reporting has on communities. The Cathy Hughes School of Communications' Core 16 has been an integral part in guiding my academic and journalistic journey. As an aspiring premier arts & culture journalist, I am eager to continue contributing to the journalism field with my varied skills. Please feel free to contact me.
